How does LifeVac work?

LifeVac is a simple, safe, and effective choking rescue device that can help save a life in the event of a choking emergency and is designed for use on both adults and children. LifeVac uses suction to remove the obstruction from the airway by placing the mask over the victim's mouth and nose, then pushing down and swiftly pulling up on the handle.

How do I use LifeVac?

We strongly encourage all customers to review our training video and become familiar with LifeVac's proper usage as soon as possible to help ensure you are confident and ready to respond effectively in an emergency.

Additionally, to view or download a copy of our instructions for use, practice instructions, or information cards, please view our Training Videos & Instructions page.

Who can use LifeVac?

LifeVac can be administered by a lay person or medical professional (18 years or older) in various settings including at home or in nursing homes, restaurants, schools, and other outside environments.

At what age can LifeVac be used?

LifeVac is intended for use on adult or pediatric choking victims who are at least 1 year of age.

Can LifeVac potentially push an obstruction further down or injure a victim by accident?

No, LifeVac will never push an object further into the airway. Its one-way valve ensures that air escapes through the vents on the device, and not into the victim, when the plunger is pushed. When you pull the plunger up, it creates suction to remove the obstruction.

Should LifeVac be used before abdominal thrusts?

While LifeVac is intended to be used as a backup after traditional protocols fail, it can be a critical life-saving device—especially for those you may be unable to perform traditional techniques on, such as those who are pregnant, elderly, or frail.

Is LifeVac effective in any position?

Yes, LifeVac can be used standing, sitting, or lying down and has successfully been used in all of these positions.

Can LifeVac be self-administered?

Yes, LifeVac can be used on yourself, making it vital for those who live alone.

Can LifeVac be used on wheelchair users or those who are pregnant?

Yes, LifeVac is extremely important for individuals in wheelchairs and those who are pregnant, as it may be difficult to perform current BLS protocols on them.

Is LifeVac FDA approved?

LifeVac is a first-in-class, FDA-authorized Class II medical device. LifeVac is the only airway clearance device with FDA authorization for commercial sale in the United States. Because it is classified as Class II, LifeVac does not require a PMA, which is reserved for higher-risk Class III devices. Its FDA authorization reflects the appropriate regulatory pathway for this category of medical device.
